The SMI-Lab program is an industry-wide collaborative program that helps companies accelerate the development and implementation of SMI enabled Client and Agent products from SNIA member companies. The program has been successful in providing an environment that manages and coordinates vendors' development efforts to deliver SMI-S conformant products to market.

SMI Lab has grown considerably since its inception in 2002 as CIM-SAN, a way to manage multi-vendor Storage Area Networks (SANs) based on the Common Information Model (CIM) and Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) technologies from the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) extended specifically for storage.

SMI-Lab is designed to:

  • Ease the implementation of the SMI-Specification in vendor products (through ongoing face-to-face developer interoperability Plugfests).
  • Reduce multi-vendor integration costs (a large multi-vendor SAN is maintained at the SNIA Technology Center and available over the internet for management application developers).
  • Build seamless interoperability between products.
  • Provide recognition to individuals and companies that contribute to the Storage Management Initiative (SMI).
  • Forward the development of the SMI-Specification (SMI-S).
  • Accelerate SNIA member SMI-S Client and Agent development using SNIA's collaborative, 7 x 24 testing environment which is supported by leading storage vendors.
  • SMI Lab participation is a pre-requisite to participate in the Storage Networking World (SNW) trade show Interoperability and Solutions Demonstrations.
  • Get early access to the SNIA Conformance Test Program (CTP) test suite for the most recent version of the SMI-Specification features and functions.
  • Vendors can evaluate their approach and market position in comparison to other vendors who have products in the same technology segment.
