SMI-S 1.1.0 defines several Profiles that enable interoperably managing a variety of storage devices in a Storage Network. Each of the management areas below are addressed in depth by SMI-S 1.1.0:

  • Array - allows a Client to manage an external RAID array or disk storage system.
  • Volume Management - allows a Client to manage physical disks as logical devices called volumes.
  • NAS Head - allows a Client to manage a Network Attached Storage system that exposes logical storage capacity such as filesystems but gets its actual capacity from external SAN storage resources.
  • Self-contained NAS System - allows a Client to manage a Network Attached Storage system that exposes logical storage capacity such as filesystems but gets its actual capacity from local storage that must also be managed.
  • Storage Library - allows a Client to manage a storage system that has mechanisms for retrieving data from different physical forms of storage media.
  • Switch - allows a Client to manage a Fibre Channel Switch device.
  • FC HBA - allows a Client manage the Fibre Channel (FC) ports on a system using a Host Bus Adapter (HBA).
  • Storage Virtualizer - allows a Client to manage a storage system that does not directly include any local storage.
  • Access Points - allows a Client to remotely manage the elements of the referencing Profile using a Web browser, telnet or other interface.
  • Blades - allows a Client to retrieve blades information from a director class switch.
  • Blades - allows a Client to retrieve information about the disk drives in a storage device.
  • Block Server Performance - allows a Client to determine the statistics supported by a storage device and retrieve and manage collections of performance statistics.
  • Device Credentials - allows a Client to change the shared secret (i.e., password) that is used to control access to the devices of the referencing Profile.
  • Job Control - allows a Client to asynchronously monitor a long running operation in the referencing Profile.
  • Location - allows a Client to retrieve information about the physical location of the device or element managed by the referencing Profile.
  • Multiple Computer System - allows a Client to retrieve configuration information about devices in the referencing Profile that have redundancy and fault tolerant characteristics.
  • Software - allows a Client to retrieve information about the software or firmware installed on the device or element managed by the referencing Profile.
  • SPI Target Ports - allows a Client to retrieve information about parallel SCSI target ports.
  • FC Target Ports - allows a Client to retrieve information about Fibre Channel target ports.
  • iSCSI Target Ports - allows a Client to retrieve information about iSCSI target ports.
  • FC Initiator Ports - allows a Client to retrieve information about Fibre Channel initiator ports.
  • iSCSI Initiator Ports - allows a Client to retrieve information about iSCSI initiator ports.
  • Copy Services - allows a Client to manage local mirrors, remote mirrors, clones and snapshots.
  • Disk Sparing - allows a Client to manage spare disks used to provide redundancy in a storage system.
  • Zone Control - allows a Client to manage zoning in a Fabric.
  • Enhanced Zone Control - allows a Client to manage aliases for zones in a Fabric.
  • Extent Composition - allows a Client to retrieve information about the layout of the areas (i.e., Extents) from the various storage pools that are allocated to create the Logical Units.
  • Masking and Mapping - allows a Client to manage the access to the Logical Units attached to the target ports on a storage system.
