File System Manipulation Subprofile

Next

The File System Manipulation Subprofile is referenced by other SNIA Storage Profiles as an optional enhancement. This Subprofile allows a Client to manage File Systems on a NAS system.

Using this Subprofile, a Client can do the following:

  • Create or remove a File System
  • Modify a File System setting
  • Ask to be notified when a File System is created or removed
  • Ask to be notified when the settings of a File System change

A Client can retrieve information about the File Systems on the NAS system. For example, a Client can determine the File System name, the total capacity and the amount of available space. A Client can determine the maximum file name length and whether file names are case sensitive and/or case preserved. Optionally, a vendor can choose to expose information about the number of files, the code set used and whether the File System is read-only.

The File System Manipulation Subprofile can optionally enhance the following Storage Profiles to provide this additional capability:

  • NAS Head Profile - allows a Client to manage File Systems and File Shares on a NAS system that does not include local storage
  • Self-Contained NAS System Profile - allows a Client to manage File Systems and File Shares on a NAS system that does include local storage

The Subprofile defines the following Subprofiles that represent optional features that a vendor may choose to support:

  • Job Control - allows a Client to asynchronously monitor a long running operation
