Storage Library Limited Access Port Elements Subprofile

Next

The Storage Library Limited Access Port Elements Subprofile is referenced by the Storage Library Profile as an optional enhancement. This Subprofile allows a Client to discover information about the mechanisms of physical access used to transport physical media into or out of a storage library. These mechanisms are called “limited access ports” because they are specific to a particular type of physical media. Such mechanisms might be mail slots, cartridge access ports, or other type of import/export element. In a storage library, removable media is located in slots or spaces. A magazine is a container for a group of storage media slots that are handled as a unit. Often, a magazine has a barcode or other identification label. Access ports can be located on a chassis or magazine.

A Client can retrieve information about the magazine such as its location coordinates and capacity. A Client can determine the media types supported. For example, the magazine might support a tape cartridge, a CD or DVD. A Client can also determine the types of label formats supported. For example, the label format might be a barcode or radio frequency identification (RFID).

A Client can retrieve information about the characteristics of the limited access port such as whether the media is physically accessible to a human or whether media access is restricted to non-human (e.g., robotic) mechanisms.

Using this Subprofile, a client can also do the following:

  • Ask to be notified when a new access port is made available
  • Ask to be notified when an existing access port is no longer available
  • Ask to be notified when the status of an existing access port changes
