Profiles | Subprofiles | Packages

The goal of the SMI-S 1.1.0 is to achieve interoperability in a Storage Area Network (SAN) that is a heterogeneous environment of management applications, storage devices and storage systems. The SMI-S 1.1.0 achieves this goal by using the Common Information Model (CIM), Web Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) and by defining Profiles and Subprofiles.

A Profile defines the base set of information and capabilities that allows a Client to manage a particular storage resource. It defines all the CIM elements (Classes, Associations, Properties, Methods, etc) that a Client must use to perform a particular task. A Subprofile defines additional CIM elements that a vendor may choose to implement in order to enhance a Profile. Doing so allows a Client to use additional features of the vendor's product.

The following sections describe Profile and Subprofiles in more detail. Then, the tutorial provides more specific information about each Profile and Subprofile defined in the SMI-S 1.1.0.
